The NCHE Community of Practice recently hosted a webinar, “Meeting the Moment: Building a Bigger We and Communicating Across Difference,” featuring Rachel Godsil and Dushaw Hockett.
Rachel Godsil is Principal of Perception Strategies LLC, Co-Founder and Senior Research Advisor at Perception Institute, and a Distinguished Professor of Law and Chancellor’s Scholar at Rutgers Law School. Dushaw Hockett is the founder and Executive Director of SPACEs, a Washington, DC-based organization dedicated to bridging the gap between what people and communities imagine and what they achieve.
The session explored how perceptions of race influence political attitudes and public support for key issues, and emphasized strategies for more effective communication across differences.
Participants gained a deeper understanding of how beliefs about race shape policy perspectives, learned practical tools for engaging across the political spectrum, and were introduced to “Goal Framing” as an alternative to “Disparity Framing.” This approach encourages focusing on shared aspirations to build broader public support for the issues communities care about.
