The law has been an important pillar in effecting social change throughout the history of the United States. Its effectiveness and use have changed over the country’s history. This discussion considers the history of litigation as a means of changing the social and economic environment, with an emphasis on both its advantages and its shortcomings. It also raises the numerous ways it interacts with public advocacy, community organizing, and litigation efforts. Finally, this discussion considers the particular challenges that we face in light of the recent election.

Dennis D. Parker is the executive director of the National Center for Law and Economic Justice (NCLEJ).
