NCHE Executive Director Dr. Brian Smedley testified on March 9 at the request of Maryland State Senator Shirley Nathan-Pulliam in support of her legislation, S.B. 869, that would create a Commission on Reconciliation and Equity to “unearth the true causes of racial and equity inequality, and to find ways to heal all communities.” If passed, the legislation would establish the first such state-level commission, modeled after the very successful efforts in South Africa and other nations around the globe to address the legacy of racism and other destructive social hierarchies.
