Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation
The ultimate goal of the TRHT enterprise is to undo the belief in a hierarchy of human value: racism and to replace it with the capacity to see ourselves in one another. This absurd belief has historically been implemented violently through annihilation, enslavement, colonization and cultural genocide. Our approach for TRHT design work is to revisit how this belief has been embedded in our society, culture, and structures as we consider effective actions. We know the belief in racial hierarchy is embedded in three primary ways:
• Separation (segregation and concentrated poverty)
• Law (civil, criminal and public policies)
• Economy (structured inequality and barriers to opportunity)
Throughout history, each avenue for embedding and sustaining the racial hierarchy has led to some form of pain and suffering; and has spawned effective advocacy activities and social movements for meaningful change. Yet the need for asserting the truth, documenting the facts and creating safe spaces for related healing and trust building remains.
Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation is an initiative of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
