National Collaborative for Health Equity - Working with people, partners, and a purpose

Embracing Our Shared Humanity: Bridging Perceived Divides, the NCHE July 2024 Convening brought together community leaders, luminaries, and changemakers to advance health equity and racial healing. Through inter-generational storytelling and discourse across diverse perspectives, participants engaged in presentations, breakout sessions, and workshops. The convening strengthened movements of Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation (TRHT) and health equity, enhanced connections for transformational work, increased knowledge of related skills and practices, and provided experiences that supported well-being and healing.

The National Collaborative for Health Equity (NCHE) recently commissioned a comprehensive survey on American adults that gauges their support for racial healing, the depth of their concerns about the divisive political environment, and their desire to work towards overcoming these challenges. The results show that Americans support racial healing, a less divisive political environment, and an accurate portrayal of racism in schools.

The National Day of Racial Healing is a time to contemplate our shared values and create the blueprint together for #HowWeHeal from the effects of racism. Launched in 2017, it is an opportunity to bring all people together in their common humanity and inspire collective action to create a more just and equitable world. The National Collaborative for Health Equity (NCHE) received a grant to assist local jurisdictions in leveraging the extraordinary health data collected under the Health Opportunity and Equity (HOPE) Initiative. The HOPE state-of-the-art platform supports a new narrative on health inequities and provides achievable pathways for states to eliminate health disparities. The comprehensive data on populations of color is a critical resource for policymakers, as well as the medical and public health fields.

Through resolutions, executive orders, and other mechanisms, local leaders are declaring racism a public health crisis and committing to addressing systemic health and racial inequities. Local leaders are exploring the policies and practices that are most needed to move from commitment to action and how to best use policy to effect meaningful change toward health, racial equity, and justice. The initiative has identified a suite of racial equity policies and practices that can be implemented at the local level to promote racial healing and address social inequities.

HOPE provides a new opportunity approach and actionable data to help our nation and states move beyond measuring disparities to spurring action toward health equity.

NCHE’s racial equity and Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation (TRHT) work builds on efforts, both national and local, to undo the historical effects of racism and jettison the false belief in a hierarchy of human value.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation created a National Commission to Transform Public Health Data Systems, a first of its kind National Commission led by NCHE The Commission, comprised of innovators and experts was convened to reimagine how data are collected, shared, and used, and identify what public and private investments are needed to improve health equity.
